What is Budapest Open?
Budapest Open is a result of the determined intention to bring the tradition of critical thinking and formal debating to Hungary. The first Budapest Open international university debate tournament was organised in March 2012. Budapest Open 2017, similarly to previous events each year since 2012, is put in place through the close cooperation between the debate societies of three Hungarian universities: Central European University, Corvinus University of Budapest and Eötvös Loránd University. The tournament brings together experienced debaters and coaches with new, enthusiastic debaters from Budapest, which ensures a great event that serves as the driving force for promoting debate in Hungary. Members of the organising committee are volunteers dedicated to the goal of creating this high level tournament.
What is debating?
Debate is a formal method of interactive argumentation. With its focus on logical consistency, factual accuracy, originality of arguments, and to some degree - emotional appeal to the audience, debate develops the art of persuasion.
Debate is known to nurture critical thinking and analytical skills; it enhances public speaking skills by teaching how to speak confidently in front of an audience; it sharpens research skills, because during a debate, in order to be able to give quick and accurate answers, it is crucial to be up to date on various current social and political affairs. Furthermore, debate develops the ability to react calmly and in a disciplined manner to unexpected situations - as the debaters’ side and position in the debate is chosen at random 15 minutes before the debate, when the motion is announced.
What are the rules?
The Budapest Open tournament uses the British Parliamentary format, which is the most prominently applied debate format in international debate tournaments. Four teams participate in a debate, divided into government and opposition; upper and lower houses, thus representing four different aspects, examining the motion at hand with four different approaches. Each team is made up of two speakers, both of whom give 7 minutes speeches.
Debating has an additional advantage when it comes to the use of the English language. During tournaments, non-native English speaker participants have a great opportunity to practice and perfect their English skills in a uniquely international environment. Although language skills are not the primary focus of debate (as logic should not be evaluated by the knowledge of the language), a tournament gives excellent motivation to perfect one’s English, to be able to give an effective, convincing speech which also complies with the rules of rhetoric.
